Kong Girl Entrepreneurs: Remove Misconceptions. Uncover Perseverance

“Do women really know how to start a business?” Celia Leung heard the question back in 2016. At the time, she had been working in public relations in the entertainment industry for six years. Her boss asked, “Managing an entertainment company is essentially no different from running a business. Have you considered launching your own firm?” It was a wake-up call. It dawned on her that entrepreneurship was an option.

Celia started her business in 2016 and faced various challenges along the way.

Celia joined different chambers of commerce and took up various advanced studies, all of which gradually shaped her entrepreneurial dream. But at one of those gatherings, she came across a query that cast doubt on women’s capability. “Do women really know how to start a business? What does a young woman know about innovative technology?” She brushed it aside. After all, it was 2016! “I think both men and women are just humans. Women might even outsmart their male folks in certain industries,” she said. Women of previous generations had to struggle harder and fend off more prejudices when building their own businesses. But times have changed. This is an age that welcomes female entrepreneurialism. “Maybe he couldn’t fathom it because he knew little about it.”

These days, Celia runs a smooth business, and has been elected an outstanding modern female professional. While building and expanding her company, Celia has run into lots of female entrepreneurs and come to appreciate their perseverance and efforts. “In fact, women’s commitment to entrepreneurialism contributes much to society – I think we should be proud of female entrepreneurs.”

Celia's philosophy of business: actions speak louder than words.

Out of that belief came the CIBS programme “Kong Girl Entrepreneurs”. It showcased women entrepreneurs in various industries, shared their tips and experiences in kicking off businesses and keeping them going, and combed through their feelings and struggles. “I hope listeners can recognise the diverse features of women and realise that women of all ages can launch their own firms.” Her wish is to clear away misconceptions about women to reveal unlimited possibilities.
